A2The church has one of the very first organs by Aristide Cavaillé. Many refer to it as his very first organ, but it is in fact his Opus No. 4. The organ was delivered on October 22, 1838. It had 47 stops on three manuals and pedalboard. Its design is typical of the transition between the classical period and the future Romantic period (Expressive Swell with the 8' and 4' harmonic flutes). The narrowness of the gallery forced the builder to create a new layout: the exposed case is that of the Positif (in 8'), the Grand-orgue and the Récit are at the back and the Pedal is placed on the sides. 1846Maison Cavaillé-Coll carried out an overhaul. 1881Stoltz et Frères performed an overhaul. Six Cavaillé-Coll games (mixtures) are replaced by four 8' stops.1902Maison Mutin-Cavaillé-Coll carried out an overhaul.1975-1978Haerpfer-Erman completed a ‘restoration’ which became a complete disaster and a black page in the history of the French organ heritage. During this ‘restoration’, it was decided that 54 notes was not enough, so there was a re-make of the chests to have 56 notes. That made it necessary to replace the whole mechanics. And that made it necessary to replace the old console. To complete the disaster, the voicing was changed into a neo-baroque direction and the number of stops was extended from 41 to 48. Fortunately, the old console was not destroyed, but left behind somewhere on the organ loft and 31 stops of Cavaillé-Coll were preserved (albeit modified). In 2020, Yves Fossaert carried out extensive works, including a reconstruction of the original wind supply and parts of the mechanics.More information…More info 2…
The construction of the church began in 1823 during the reign of Louis XVIII and was completed in 1836 during the reign of Louis-Philippe, with Louis-Hippolyte Lebas as architect. Georges Bizet received his baptism at the church on March 16, 1840, while the painter Claude Monet was baptized on May 20, 1841. César Franck was married there on February 22, 1848.
